The Earth Is Generous To….

The earth is generous to those who know the land and its secrets.

What a great quote.

I wish I had someone to credit this great quote to, but, in fact, I heard it in the most random place.  It did get me thinking about my own home garden.

Well, I wouldn’t actually call it a garden.  It’s more like a well-intended plot with an adjacent potting bench, tools and equipment.  What’s that other saying?… the best intentions?

Anyhow, I’m not going to pretend that I know anything about gardening; it’s merely been a place for the kids and I to have a little fun by plopping some seeds and plants into the dirt and hope for the best.

After hearing this today- “the earth is generous”- it made me go assess my “garden”.

It’s a disaster.  There’s no way the earth is going to be generous to me if this is the best I can do.  And so I wonder if I couldn’t just try to know it- and its secrets- a little better.

And how great would it be to pass down and share those secrets with my children.  It reminds me of the book Secret Garden– who could ever forget that famous line, “might I have a bit of earth?”  I was only 7 when I read that line and it’s depth was branded onto my soul.

Well, I do have a bit of earth.  Let’s see what I can do with it now.

Any hope?

Slummy Mummy

Last week for Groundhog Day I wrote about using organization as a tool to “Living The Dream” as a busy mom and what my life would look like if I lived each day as I dreamed.  What I forgot to consider when I wrote this is what I would look like in that vision.

For a decade I was a busy corporate gal; and with a career that entailed public relations duties, I had to dress the part.  While the weekends were reserved for a more relaxed au naturale look, I still kept it chic.

After the twins were born followed by my surprise baby (I say this in part because she was a wonderful surprise and also because she was born on my birthday, New Year’s Day), I, like many moms, barely had enough time to wash my face let alone throw on some makeup.  Now that the kids are older and in school I have no excuse.   But without a day full of meetings and clients I didn’t understand my motivation for taking the time to style myself.  I had the “go-to” sweats, ponytail, sunglasses…and yes, sometimes a baseball cap- the mom uniform (ugh).  I only dressed myself on days with scheduled events.  After all, who did I need to get all primped for, anyhow?  The answer to that question came after too much time passed where I was brushing past other moms at school with a quick “hi” and ducking out of Starbucks as quickly as possible.  I realized I was actually avoiding human contact!

On the days when my schedule demanded that I actually take the time to get myself ready, I felt better.  I chatted with friends, made eye contact and smiled more.  I looked better so I felt better.  I realized that the only person I needed to dress for in the morning was myself.  Now I’ve organized my schedule to choose outfits for the next day with mornings arranged for a few more minutes for myself.  So, if anyone out there is feeling a bit sluggish today, for goodness sake- put on some lip gloss!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhog Day everyone!

Oprah Winfrey calls it “Living Your Best Life”.  Joyce Meyer says, “Enjoying Everyday Life”.  One of my best friends, Kim, a busy mom of two toddlers, refers to it as “Living The Dream”- this best describes our busy-mom world.  Although, I can’t help but notice some slight sarcasm once in a while when she says this.

Kim also once told me that, “organization is really the key to everything”.  When she said “everything”, I’m assuming she was referring to this dream life.  So, when I begin to notice the gap between what my day is shaping up to look like versus what my “living the dream” life looks like, I can’t help but wonder how to merge these two universes.  It’s like looking at a sticky-note doodle and seeing a Renoir painting.

Is organization the key?  I’m going to find out.  Today is Groundhog Day and it makes me want to watch my favorite movie.  If you haven’t already seen the film, Groundhog Day, you’re really missing out.  There’s been a lot of philosophical debate on this movie too.  Bill Murray plays Phil, who must live one day of his life over and over again- thousands of times- until he gets it right.  In order to move on to the next day, he has to do everything perfect and learn so many lessons just to be liberated from this one day- Groundhog Day.  What rings so true for me is the idea of what could come tomorrow if I live this day according to my dream.  What’s even more important…. am I living the same day over and over and over again until I get it right?  And what lies ahead and around the corner if I do get it right?

So this morning I woke up more aware.  I used more smiles, more patience and more gratitude getting my kids ready and to school.  I didn’t scold myself for forgetting Brooke’s school picture money and needing to make an extra trip home to retrieve it.  But at the same time couldn’t help but make a mental note, that perhaps a bit more organization to this morning couldn’t have hurt.

Journey with me in my blog, “Living The Dream” while I explore if organization is really the framework for getting my Renoir dream.  And I would love to hear from each of you about living yours as well.

Snow Falls On Las Vegas

While many of you in the country are feeling the woes of heavy snowfall; we in Las Vegas are hoping to borrow a dash or two again.  When you picture living in the desert, it’s hard to envision snow.  But just a month ago we were heading out the door for school one morning and saw snowflakes begin to fall.

It’s the best of both worlds- just enough snowfall to taste the magic of it, while the desert will keep the effects from staying.  I had to forget the time for a few minutes and let the kids take it in.
